Walmart Allows Pharmacists to Discriminate Against Women: Right from the Horse's Mouth

Yet more reasons to despise WalMart--Chris

I was doing my daily email actions which included an email from the Citizen's Action Network(CAN) for Naral Pro-choice America to all major US Pharmacy Chains. As most of you probably already know, Pharmacists across the country have been denying to fill prescriptions for birth control due thier personal opposition to women being allowed to control their own fertility. Here is the email that I sent (written by NARAL):

Dear Wal-Mart Pharmacies,

All over the country I have noticed a disturbing trend of pharmacies refusing to fill women's prescriptions for birth control. When a woman and her doctor decide that a prescription for contraception is in the woman's best interest, a third party has no right to override that decision. Pharmacies must ensure that patients get their doctor- prescribed medication without delay or inconvenience. I ask that your company assure me and your other customers that no woman seeking prescription contraception will be turned away by your company's pharmacies.

No doubt a majority of your customers take for granted that women should be able to receive their birth control despite the personal beliefs of the individual pharmacist. Timely access to contraception is central to women's health, autonomy, and equality. We must trust women and their doctors to make their own reproductive health decisions.

I thank you, in advance, for protecting your customer's health by ensuring your pharmacy will guarantee women have unhindered access to their prescribed medications.

Thank you for your attention and support.

Sincerely,
Levana

Usually these emails go off into the ether, and I hope that someone reads them, but I guess that Walmart has been getting a lot of these, so they actually had an auto response to my specific comments. I was quite surprised at their comments:

Just what the Doctor Ordered: Dean is what the Democratic Party needs

I thought that the article printed in the Washington Post today, Ailing Democrats Put Their Faith in Dr. Dean: Some Fear Choice Will Add to Red-State Blues, regarding Howard Dean's ensured win of the Chairmanship of the DNC was ridiculously biased against Dean. The media's coverage of him has been so off the mark, it is practically absurd. If Howard Dean is an outsider among the people of the Democratic party, then how did he inspire so many supporters and single-handedly reinvigorate what was left of the grassroots Democrats? The truth is that the Party leadership has strayed so far from the actual people who they represent, that average the Democratic voter would rather stay at home than vote for another uninspiring candidate who can't decide where he stands on the issues until the pollsters tell him what to think.

If the people want certainty, moral leadership, and a firm grasp of principle then the Republicans have been the go-to party of late. However, the Republicans are certainly wrong when it comes to compassion for the poor, valuing hard work over wealth, and tolerance for all people in this great nation. In fact, the only value that the Democratic leadership has showed loyalty to lately is the value of how much money they can raise while still pandering to minorities and the grassroots. If they think that is best way to revive Party is this never ending race to the middle, then I hope they are satisfied when they find themselves at a frat party with a keg of Bush Lite. Pandering is not good enough for me. We need to go back to being the party of fairness, equality, and tolerance. I am a patriot, I am a Democrat, and I am grateful that we finally have leadership who will reflect my values.
